Monroe migrated to Cleveland, Ohio at the age of 13 with only a 6th grade education. Despite limited schooling Monroe made a comfortable lifestyle for his family. Working as a laborer with a strong work ethic, Monroe held employment at companies LJ Gotley, Van Dorn and retired from the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections.

Monroe married Eleanor Caldwell on November 14, 1953. They were devoted members of Greater Abyssinia Baptist Church and from that union three beautiful children were born: Calvin Curry (Gina), Gregory Curry (Tracey) and Glenda Todd-Miller (Calvin). Monroe loved to garden and work with his hands; On any given day you could find him tending to his tomatoes, and greens and mowing his yard. In his free time, he enjoyed fishing; a hobby that was introduced to him by his son Calvin and was continued on for years with his father-in-law Leonard Caldwell. Monroe was a simple man with impeccable style. He was often referred to as “Money” by his friends and could always be seen rocking one his favorite hats. While his education was limited, he highly valued and advocated education for his children and grandchildren.
